Firefighters worked into the afternoon Saturday to extinguish a fire reported late Friday night that caused $1.75 million in damage to an unoccupied luxury home in Wailea.

The fire was reported at 11:51 p.m. Friday at 3100 Wailea Alanui Drive, with eight fire companies and two battalion chiefs responding, according to the Maui Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived to find the one-story, 4,300-square-foot property burning. Crews established a water supply and used attack lines to knock down the active fire and also worked to extinguish a vehicle fire in the attached carport, the Fire Department reported.

Firefighters also fought a fire on the roof that had extended into the space between the roof covering and decking below and had to tear off the metal covering to gain access to and extinguish the stubborn blaze, according to the Fire Department.

The fire was brought under control at 12:50 a.m. Saturday and extinguished at 1:35 p.m.

A damage estimate for the unit’s contents wasn’t available.

The cause of the fire was undetermined. The Fire Department reported no indications that the fire was intentionally set.

Engine, ladder and tanker companies from Wailea responded to the fire, along with Kihei and Makawao engine companies and engine, rescue and hazmat companies from Kahului.

Restaurants on Maui Open Status during COVID19

The 12-minute film “Haleakala: A Rare and Sacred Landscape” was officially released by Haleakala National Park and is available on YouTube at Haleakala film 2019.   The video includes views of Haleakala’s summit, rain forest and shoreline at Kipahulu, the park said. There also is a rare glimpse of the Kipahulu Valley Biological Reserve, and a discussion of volcano’s Native Hawaiian heritage, unique geology and endemic species, including rare native birds and plants, and includes tips for hiking and visiting the park.   It was funded by a grant from the nonprofit The Fund for People in Parks, a group that supports parks and protected lands, and produced by Steven M. Bumgardner with narration by Kaohu James and a soundtrack with music by George Kahumoku Jr.  The film content was produced in cooperation with the National Park Service, Native Hawaiian elders and members of the local community.   “Creating this film required patience in dealing with quickly changing weather conditions and diligence to capture the essence of Haleakala,” said Park Superintendent Natalie Gates. “We are proud of the collaborative teamwork that went into crafting the messages of this film by the filmmaker, Native Hawaiian elders, local community, park staff and volunteers.”
