Singapore takeover of 780-room Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa in Wailea, Hawaii possible
Singapore’s sovereign-wealth fund is forcing an auction of four massive luxury U.S. resorts, setting up the fund for a confrontation with the existing owners: a group led by hedge fund Paulson & Co. and Boston-based Winthrop Realty Trust. At stake is control over some of the most-prestigious hotel properties in the U.S., including the 780-room Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa in Wailea, Hawaii. The properties have been operating under bankruptcy-court protection for the past 18 months, after prior owners were unable to pay off $1.5 billion in mortgages. (8/12)

Honua‘ula at center of lawsuit by Sierra Club and Maui Unite
Wailea Sierra Club lawsuit over Honua’ula real estate development featuring 1,150 homes and condos on 670 acres above Wailea Resort. The project is expected to include an 18-hole golf course and clubhouse, retail and commercial components, a 12-mile network of trails and bike paths, and a 40-acre preserve for native plants.  (10/12)

Millions for couple who sued condo association

Mixed-use makeover planned at Maui Research Technology park

Maui County “Show Me The Water” ordinance 
Before the Show Me the Water ordinance, Maui County expected developers to provide water or to cooperate with the county in developing sources of water. Wouldn’t it be better, he asked, to complete the Maui Island Plan, assess the possible resources and then propose a program to deal with it? Ritz-Carlton Hotel and Kapalua Bay project to get new luxury residence management in $55 million sale
A high bid of $55 million in the bankruptcy auction will lead to new management for condominiums that were initially priced between $3.9 million and $9.8 million.   With new ownership coming, the financially troubled Residences at Kapalua Bay appears poised to turn the corner. (1/13)

For sale:  Aston Maui Lu Resort, Kihei/Maui
The existing complex of multilevel buildings and individual bungalows sits on prime oceanfront land with 600 feet of shoreline and six miles of state-owned white-sand beach on either side.  A potential sale price from a weekly newsletter focused on investing in the U.S. commercial market, estimates the resort’s sale could attract bids of approximately $68 million.  (9/12)
